Funding

Funding Overview

As a highly succesful research centre, the ORC has well-funded places for UK students allocated each year, and a number of options for EU and other International students.

In general, the options are split into 3, depending on where you have citizenship: UK, EU and non-EU. These options are quite complicated, but don't worry - we'll help you.

PLEASE NOTE: The information below is for guidance only, and may be subject to change without notice. Please contact us for accurate figures and details!

How it works

The two main costs involved are the fees for the programme and your living expenses while you are studying here. The fees vary depending on whether you are a UK, EU or non-EU student. It is extremely unusual for UK students to pay the fees themselves, as there are usually grants available.

Each year we offer a number of scholarships for UK and EU students. These scholarships will fully cover programme fees and provide a fixed allowance (maintenance grant) which will be paid to you in quarterly instalments. You can use the maintenance grant to cover your living expenses (accommodation etc.).

If you are an International student, you may be able to apply for award schemes from your own government. If you need funding from us, make sure you apply as early as possible, as the deadlines for funding are often in the first part of the year you wish to start in.

Below is an outline of some of the funding options that may be available. The important thing is to make contact with us as early as possible so we can direct you towards the best sources of funding and help you apply.

All figures are for October 2008 unless otherwise stated.

Abbreviations

EPSRC - Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
DTA - Doctoral Training Account (allocated by the Research Council)
IDS - International Doctoral Scholarship, which allows us to convert an ‘international’ student to home status and full DTA eligibility
ORS - Overseas Research Scholarship – awarded by the University on a competitive basis; this only covers a proportion of the international fees
