About Dr Jacob Mackenzie

J. I. Mackenzie a Senior Research Fellow of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), at the University of Southampton, heads the Planar Waveguide and Slab Lasers research group, having recently completed a Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) - Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (PDRF).
In 1995 Dr Mackenzie was awarded a first-class-honours Bachelors of Technology degree, majoring in optoelectronics, by Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He subsequently moved into industry as an electro-optic engineer for BAE Systems (Australia), involved in a wide range of research and development projects. As part of a small electro-optics group, he was tasked with several multi-disciplinary roles ranging from optical design to laser systems engineering. However, his primary role was the development of solid-state diode-pumped-slab laser-range-finders for airborne and naval applications. Before leaving to further his education, he was presented with a British Aerospace Award for Excellence, for innovative design, analysis, and test methods.
Late in 1999 he joined the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton to undertake his doctoral studies, for which his submitted thesis was entitled, ‘High-Brightness Diode-Pumped Waveguide Lasers’ and was awarded his Ph.D. degree in 2003. The primary emphasis of his doctoral degree was solid-state laser devices based on double-clad planar waveguide (PW) structures. As part of an industrial collaboration with Onyx Optics Ltd. (Dublin, California), he spent several weeks visiting their site, working with them on newly developed waveguide structures. Arising from his investigations were several publications, including, the first reported demonstration of multi-watt and diffraction-limited end-pumped 1micron PW lasers, using Nd:YAG for continuous wave (CW) and Yb:YAG for passively Q-switched output. In addition he was the first to report Watt-level output powers from an Er:YAG PW laser, operating near the water absorption band at a wavelength of ~3m. Following his PhD studies he was employed as a research fellow by the ORC investigating power-scaling approaches for solid-state lasers in the 2micron regime.
Currently
Dr Mackenzie has over 40 publications in the field of planar waveguide and efficient solid-state lasers. He has been a member of the program committee for the SPIE Photonics West - Solid State Lasers: Technology and Devices conference for the past three years and will co-chair SPIE’s Photonics Europe: Solid State Lasers and Amplifiers in Brussels in 2010.

Research interests:
Dr Mackenzie’s research interests include: efficient solid-state laser systems and extending the applicability of the planar-geometry targeting applications whose needs range from power scaling to integration and miniaturisation. His research is closely associated with that of the Advanced Solid State Sources and Pulsed Laser Deposition groups of the ORC. With an active collaboration continuing with Onyx Optics Ltd. he has many other contacts within industry from his earlier employment and associations during his postdoctoral studies.
