About Dr Gilberto Brambilla

Gilberto Brambilla is a principal research fellow at the ORC, where he has been employed as a researcher since 2002. He obtained his MSc (Material Engineering) with honours from Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and his PhD degree in Optoelectronics from the ORC in 2002. In 2007 he was awarded the prestigious Research Fellowship from the Royal Society. In the last few years he has been working on the fabrication of devices based on optical fibre nanowires, fibre tapers and couplers, on the design and fabrication of fibre sensors for X-ray detection and the design of special fibres and fibre combiners for the preservation of high brightness in fibre-diode coupling. He is responsible for the taper/coupler fabrication facilities and most recently he has been working on the fabrication and characterization of silica and compound glass nanowires. He has published >100 papers in international scientific journals/conferences, authored 3 patents and co-authored 2 books on optical fibres.
