About Dr Francesco Poletti

Dr Francesco Poletti graduated with honours in Electronics Engineering at the University of Parma (Italy) in 2000. From 2000 to 2003 he worked on the design of optical telecoms networks at Marconi Communications, where he studied the effect of nonlinear impairments in WDM systems and made key contributions to the development of a patented self-stabilised amplified metropolitan ring system. In 2007 he obtained a PhD in optoelectronics from the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton (UK) for his work on the direct and inverse design of microstructured optical fibres. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the ORC.

Dr Poletti has a strong background in electromagnetism, nonlinear optics and numerical modelling. His research focuses on the study of micro and nano-structured optical waveguides, and on the modelling of photonic bandgap structures, nonlinear optical processes and inverse electromagnetic problems. In May 2009 he was awarded two prestigious Postdoctoral Research Fellowships from the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society, in support of his research on the design of novel gas, liquid and semiconductor filled holey fibres for nonlinear applications in biomedical, industrial and telecoms areas.
