Vacancy - Research

Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Integrated Photonic Devices
(2 postions)

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £27,578 to £33,884
Contract: Full Time Fixed Term
Closing Date:   Tuesday 20 March 2012
Reference:  094412EH

The Optoelectronics Research Centre has a 40-year track record of pioneering contributions in photonics and is currently one of the largest and most dynamic research centres in this field world-wide.

The Integrated Photonic Devices Group explores the fundamentals of guided wave optics at surfaces, with applications including telecommunications, biosensing and novel light sources, and is complemented by world-class photonic materials and fabrication facilities.

We seek to appoint two creative, capable, and self-motivated postdoctoral scientists or engineers to join a team exploring optical waveguide devices for biomedical diagnostics, following the award of a European Research Council Advanced Investigator Grant to Professor James Wilkinson.

This research programme presents an excellent opportunity for individual creativity to flourish in a strong team environment, addressing topics from Mid-IR and nanostructured waveguide materials, through the photonic toolkit for biochemical diagnostics to clinical applications.

The successful applicants will demonstrate creativity and proven scientific ability, a desire to open new technological/scientific frontiers and good team-working skills. A PhD in a relevant scientific/engineering discipline is required and expertise in biosensing, instrumentation or waveguide device modelling is desirable.

Applications are particularly encouraged from people with experience in the design and fabrication of novel waveguide devices although applications from candidates with a track record of internationally leading research in any branch of optics and/or photonic component fabrication are welcome. It is expected that both research fellows will collaborate closely with researchers in Chemistry and the Faculty of Medicine.

These posts are for 3 years in the first instance with expected extension up to five years and excellent opportunities to progress further.

You are welcome to contact James Wilkinson by email at jsw@orc.soton.ac.uk or by telephone on +442380 592792 for an informal discussion.

The closing date for these posts is 20th March 2012
