Integrated Optofluidic Device for Particle Analysis and Sorting

Optofluidics is the combination of integrated optics and microfluidics. This project aims to investigate how to make optofluidic devices that analyse passing particles in a microfluidic channel using integrated optics components (such as waveguides and lens) on the same chip to manipulate a laser beam. Planar integrated optical components may increase device sensitivity and/or allow researchers to acquire different optical signals than available from bulk devices. These signals can be then used to distinguish particles from one another and record physical properties of the particle such as its size, surface roughness, etc. These devices have applications biology such as cell screening, and cell sorting.
