Chalcogenide Thin Films Deposited By RF Sputtering

Contact: Dr Majid Hassan

The primary objective of this work is to supply high quality chalcogenide thin films from in-house targets for use in several funded projects in the Novel Glass group. In this project, we also aim to study the influence of their thickness and morphology on their optical characteristics (optical band gap and refractive index). Sputtering films can also provide anti-reflection coatings and protective layers for application in a wide range of our activities. This project in particular, promotes a new direction of research, and also has the potential to attract new industrial collaborations and funding in the area of the new generation of phase change optical storage media applications such as DVD-RW and the field of Semiconductors for non volatile memories.

This work is funded in part by EPSRC grant GR/S96500/01 Integrated Microsphere Planar Lightwave Circuits and as part of EPSRC grant EP/C515668/1 Portfolio Partnership in Photonics.
