Planar Waveguide and Slab Lasers

PhD projects

Advanced solid-state planar lasers

Novel laser sources based on a planar geometry have the potential for high average powers from a compact footprint. This is achievable through the well-known thermal management advantages of high-aspect-ratio slabs in comparison with other active host configurations. This project involves the study of solid-state planar bulk and waveguide gain media for achieving high average powers in both the CW and pulsed regime, with the aim to obtain good beam quality in a format applicable to applications demanding high-brightness sources, such as pump sources for nonlinear conversion or direct light-materials interactions.

Student top-up offer!

In collaboration with Onyx Optics, California USA, we are currently searching for top-class British or EU candidates for a new project on visible solid-state planar waveguide lasers. The top-up will give you a 13month stipend per annum, instead of the usual twelve, and a visit to the sponsor’s, Onyx Optics, facilities as part of your research programme. If you think you have the qualifications, motivation, and enthusiasm and would like to be considered for a 2007 start, please contact Jacob Mackenzie.
